Cross Cultural Challenges
With the wide use of online technologies in education, more and more courses are moved from face to face classes into the online learning environment. The globalization of e-learning enables students from different cultural backgrounds to take online courses. Yet online learning still distinctly remains mainly in western countries. Gee (1999) mentioned that students are exposed to “mono-cultural, mono-linguistic and mono-epistemic discursive practices.” That means students whose native language is not English, or those speak English but from different cultural backgrounds are forced to adjust themselves quickly into the dominant discourse as quick as they can to survive in online learning environment. Both instructors and students are facing challenges caused by diverse cultures, mainly reflected in language, different ways of communication and socialization styles (Yang, Olesova & Richardson, 2010). |
